The organ in
Presteigne Baptist Church
The organ was built in 1950 by the firm of Harris Organs, of
Birmingham, given by Mrs Pullman of Sutton Coldfield in memory of her parents,
Mr & Mrs Wale of ‘Silia’ in Presteigne.
The organ is operated by electric action and has 410 pipes.

The opening of the organ took place on 3 August 1950, with
the opening recital given on 20 November that year. The soloist for the opening was the
celebrated theatre organist and BBC personality, Sandy Macpherson.
History of
Presteigne Baptist Church
The chapel dates from 1845, and parts of it were rebuilt in
1875 with an extension with schoolrooms added in 1885. The church is in a simple Classical style
with interior galleries giving the feeling of an earlier period of church
building.
The Hereford Journal for 26 March 1845 has the
following piece:
The above chapel was opened for divine worship on Tuesday 18th
March. At half-past-ten in the morning, the Rev. Maurice Jones of Leominster
preached from I Corinthians 13. V.13 and the
Rev. Samuel Blackmore, of Kington from Psalm 93, v.5. The Rev. D Evans concluded with prayer. At three in the afternoon, the Rev J
Middleton (Primitive Methodist) prayed; the Rev. Jenkin Thomas, of Cheltenham,
preached from I Peter 2, v.21. At half
past six in the evening the Rev. T Jones, of the Rock, prayed; the Rev T Thomas preached from Hebrews 4. V. 14 to an
overflowing congregation. The collection
at the close of the services amounted to £22 6s.6d which with £233
subscriptions etc received, make £255
6s. 6d. There yet remains a
considerable debt on the building but it is confidently hoped that the friends
of the Redeemer will liberally assist in liquidating the expense incurred by
the erection of the chapel. This place
of worship, which is an exceedingly neat one, was erected by Messrs.
Wishlade. It is 36 ft 6 inches long, by
25 feet 3 inches wide inside, with galleries and will seat upwards of 300
persons. There are 150 free sittings; a
vestry is attached and a small cemetery.
Miss Pugh, of the Well House, kindly presented a handsome crimson velvet
cushion for the pulpit and has otherwise contributed liberally. The Denomination are also obliged to Mr
Vaughan of Presteigne for a substantial oak communion table.
